Lone Star Cell Sponsors Major Olympics

A two-day Olympic sponsored by Liberia’s Premier GSM Service Provider, Lonestar Cell,  has ended at Ricks Institute situated in Brewerville, outside Monrovia.

The Olympic, which was organized by the Administration of Ricks Institute, ran from   Friday through Saturday of the weekend.

At least 15 high schools from six counties participated in the Olympic, which was played in four categories namely Soccer, Female Basketball, Kickball and Male Basketball.

Some of the schools that participated in the Olympic included host Ricks Institute of Brewerville, St. Peter Claver High School of Grand Bassa County, Charles  H. Dewey High School of Bomi County, Levi H. Martin of Nimba, William Booth of Pipeline- Paynesville, Robertsport High School of Grand Cape Mount County among others.

Charles H. Dewey High School of Bomi County was crowned   Soccer Champion of the “Ricks Olympic”.
Charles H. Dewey High School defeated St. Peter Claver High 1-0 in an entertaining soccer encounter before a record crowd at the Ricks Soccer Pitch in Brewerville.

Host Ricks Institute put up a magnificent 43 to 30 points win over their visitor R. C. Lawson to lift up the Male Basketball Trophy. Student Melvin Solee of Ricks Institute was awarded a medal as the Most Valuable Player or   MVP of that category.

Also in Basketball, the Girls of Nathan E. Gibson Memorial Academy defeated their host Ricks Institute in a convincing 33 to 19 points win to be crowned as champion of the Female Basketball Category. In this category, student Amaze Dean of Nathan E. Gibson was awarded medal as the MVP.

Unlike the Male and Female Basketball Finalists, who were all from Montserrado County, the Kickball Category was absolutely different, as the two finalists were St. Peter Claver High of Grand Bassa and Charles H. Dewey of Bomi Counties respectively.

However, Charles H. Dewey High School wiped St. Peter Claver High School 6 to 2 Home-Runs to capture the Kickball Trophy. Student Sando Vincent of Charles H. Dewey won the MVP award in the said category.

In a chat with the New Dawn Sports shortly after the kick off of the Olympic, the Marketing Manager of Lonestar Cell, Madam Wanneh A. Dixon, said her institution was proud to be associated with a sporting event where in students from all over Liberia can come together to interact with one another, get new ideas and in her words make friends for life.

She described the event as a forum for students to express their passion for sports, saying it is a unique event for life time connection. She encouraged the students to take advantage of such gathering where ever they may be held.

Madam Dixon, who is a Long Tennis Player, lauded the Ricks Institute Administration for such a well organized event. The Lonestar Cell Marketing Manager then pledged her institution unflinching support to said event.

For his part, the Principal of Ricks Institute, Dr. Olu Menjay, said the “Ricks Olympic”, as it is popularly known,  is an  aged old  sporting event  and a tradition of the institution that was cut off due to the 14 years armed conflict  in the country.

However, he expressed joy that the annual sporting event organized by his institution has been resurrected. The March 26 & 27 2010 “Ricks Olympic” was the first in post war Liberia. It brought together over 3,000 students and Schools administrators from fifteen different high schools across Liberia.
