Declining Pleebo – High Worries Marylanders

A visiting delegation of Marylanders residing in the United States is appealing to the Liberian Government to rescue the Pleebo High School in Maryland County from its state of decline.

Pleebo High is the only government high school located in the county’s commercial capital. Pleebo has a population of 22,963, according to the 2008 National Housing and Population Census. The delegation, which visited the school recently, discovered the school has not been renovated since the 14-year civil conflict that ended officially in 2003.

Pleebo Sorroken District Education Officer, Madam. S. Selley Williams Cooper took the delegation on a guided tour of the institution, which has an enrollment of 1,738 students.

She told the delegation that the school runs morning, afternoon and night sessions. Madam Cooper disclosed that the morning session has 835 students, while the afternoon has 528 and the night session 375 students.

She also disclosed that the school lacks basic learning materials and facilities, including textbooks, library and laboratory while the campus lacks toilet and water facilities.

On a high note, Madam Cooper disclosed that 85 percent of senior high students of the school who sat the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) during the 2012-2013 academic passed the test.
