Mobile money climaxes inter high school tournament

Lonestar Cell MTN on Sunday, 4 May ended its Mobile Money Inter High School football and kickball tournament in Gardnerville outside Monrovia. The first Mobile Money football and kickball tournament was held in West Point Township and the Borough of New Kru Town years ago.

Speaking to reporters, Lonestar Cell MTN Manager of Mobile Money, Samelia Tweh, said the tournament is intended to create awareness for the Mobile Money service in that part of Liberia. She said the sensitization is geared towards encouraging more customers, mainly students to subscribe to the service, adding, the service is not marketed in the Gardnerville area.

The tournament, which brought together over eight high schools, was captured by the Wells Hairston High School in Chicken Soup Factory with the Jimmy Jolocon High School taking 2nd place. Wells Hairston High School also won the kickball category of the tournament. During the games, those who are not registered with mobile money were encouraged to do their registration and pay their school fees through the service.

Speaking on behalf of the participating schools, the Principal of the Jimmy Jolocon High School, Mr. Amos D. Doe, thanked the Lonestar Cell MTN Mobile Money Department for hosting the tournament. Mr. Doe said the tournament also served as a unifying force in the area as it brought together various schools.

He said schools were not in good terms, came together, saying, “This tournament has brought unity to us, I mean all of the schools in this Gardnerville belt; there are schools in this area that could not go along with each other but this tournament has made it possible for these schools to be friendly.”

He, however, encouraged Lonestar Cell MTN to continue the good work in uniting Liberians through any means possible.
