Representative-elect alleges marginalization of FulanisĀ

By Lewis S. Teh

Montserrado County Electoral District #1 Representative-elect Rugie Yatu Barry has alleged that Fulanis in Liberia are marginalized despite their significant contributions through taxes and development initiatives.

ā€œWe have been marginalized regardless of all the taxes that we pay in this country as Fula people,” she alleged on Tuesday, 9 January 2024 in Louisiana.

During an appreciation program held under the auspices of the Fula community in Liberia, Barry told her kinsmen that they were still being looked down upon.

She said her victory in the just-ended election means that her entire community has a seat in the Legislature because thatā€™s where she comes from.

ā€œAnd thatā€™s the reason why, today, Hon. Governor, I would like to present this certificate to you. Hang it in your office,ā€ she said, addressing a leader of the Fulanis in Liberia.

ā€œI am not taking it back; hang it in your office. It is for the community so that we will see and know that we are from a group of community, tribe, and to show that we have respect for elders, our people, and our tribes,ā€ she said.

Barry claimed that the Fula people have faced discrimination and segregation, despite their consistent payment of taxes.

She believes that her election victory represents a win for her district, as she aims to address their concerns and fight for their rights.

ā€œYou canā€™t bring me to the middle of the water and let me drown. Now that we are there, we need everybody’s support so that we can raise our hands for tomorrow.ā€

ā€œWhen we say that we are Fula, we have our landmark here. It is your support that will help us bring about the change that we have been looking for,ā€ Barry continued.

She noted that she is the only Fula person since 1847 who has become a lawmaker in Liberia.

Barry reminded her kinsmen that she would depend on them to succeed and improve District #1.

The thanksgiving ceremony held by the Fula Community in Liberia was intended to thank the people of Louisiana for the efforts made to elect Madam Barry as Representative of District #1.

The Fula community has a rich history and has played a vital role in various sectors of Liberia’s economy. It is renowned for its involvement in trade, agriculture, and other entrepreneurial endeavors.

The Fula Governor of Liberia, Alhaji Baillo Sow, spoke through an interpreter during the program. He said his people need representation like Representative Barry in the Legislature.
