Liberia to attend Maracana Sport Conference
The International Federation of Maracana Sport has announced August 2015 for its international conference on the sport to discuss the way forward in promoting the game in West Africa.
Maracana Sport is an international game, which is commonly known in Liberia as “Freetown Ball”. The game is widely played in Africa, South America and some Western countries. This year’s conference, scheduled for Lome, Togo will highlight training for technical staff and players on rules governing the game. It is believed that the three international tournaments planned for this year and early next year will also be highlighted during the conference.
Countries expected to attend include Liberia, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The decision to host the conference in Togo derived from a recent meeting held in Ivory Coast with the Ivorian Minister of Youth and Sports, Francois Albert Almichia.
At the end of the daylong discussion, representatives of member countries agreed to invite prominent individuals, including sports personalities to attend the August’s conference.
The President of the International Maracana Sport Federation in Liberia, Bleu Charlemagne, said Montserrado County Senator, George Weah, Youth and Sports Minister, Lenn Eugene Nagbe and the President of the Liberia Old-Timers Sports Association, Cllr. Theophilus C. Gould will be given official communication ahead of the conference.
The Old Timber’s Sports Association is expected to participate in the game whose players are between ages 12 and 72. The Ivoirian government has reportedly made budgetary allotment for Maracana Sport to enable its various sporting associations promote the game throughout that country.
A Liberian, Sheikh AI Mustapha Houyateh, has been appointed regional president for the International Federation for Maracana Sport to promote the game in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
