Blind man arrested for rape

Police in Nimba County have arrested and charged a 40-year-old visually impaired man for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in Gbeivornwea town, District#4, Nimba County last week Saturday, July 25th.

According to police charge sheet obtained by The NewDawnNimba County correspondent, the accused has admitted to the act. Family members said the victim was left alone at home near suspect Abraham Gongbay’s house when he (Abraham) called the minor and advised her that it was not safe for a child like her to be sitting along by the house at night time waiting for her parents therefore, luring her into his place where he sexually abused her.

Medical report from the G.W. Harley Hospital in Sanniquellie, Nimba County copy of which was obtained by our correspondent confirmed that the victim was raped. Meanwhile, suspect Gongbay has been arrested and detained at the Sanniquellie Central Prison, pending trial.

The Government of Liberia has legislated rape as a capital offense punishable by life sentence. The authorities here have also established Criminal Court E at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia to fast track rape cases. By Franklin Doloquee, Nimba – Editing by Jonathan Browne
