Ganta Business Union wants tax payment suspended

Traders in Ganta, Nimba County under the banner Ganta Business Trade Union, have complained of customs inspectors and tax collectors pressurizing them consistently to pay tax arrears and emergency taxes.

The chairman of the Ganta Business Trade Union, Madison Gausi, said the union’s dissatisfaction derives from the fact that the state of emergency declared by President Sirleaf has paralyzed many businesses, with little or no customers, leaving with no alternative but to shut down in order to avoid unnecessary liabilities. He contends that while the union is prepared to support economy, the collection of taxes and other tariffs should be carefully revisited or suspended during this Ebola crisis.

When contracted, the communication specialist for the revenue department at the   Ministry of Finance and development Planning, A. Trokon Tarr, said in the wake of the outbreak of the Ebola virus, government needs money therefore, all taxes are being collected.

Mr. Tarr said the collection of taxes will continue, noting that businesses around the country are operating and paying taxes to government, but only in Nimba, mainly Ganta, businesses are refusing to pay taxes. He warns that business entities refusing to pay taxes to government revenue will be shutdown.
