Gongloe Youth Movement doubts Boakaiā€™s anti-corruption commitment

By Lincoln G. Peters

The Gongloe Youth Movement has heavily descended on former ruling Unity Party (UP) and its standard bearer Amb. Joseph Nyumah Boakai.

The group which supports Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloeā€™s presidential bid, has expressed doubts over Amb. Boakaiā€™s recent statement committing to his government to fight against corruption if elected president on 10 October 2023.

The Gongloe Youth Movement (GYM) said it detects high level of lies, deception, and falsehood in Amb. Boakaiā€™s anti-corruption statement.

In an elaborate press conference Sunday, 8 October 2023 at the Liberian Peopleā€™s Party (LPP) headquarters in Congo Town, GYM said Mr. Boakai cannot be entrusted with the presidency.

The group alleged that Boakaiā€™s former ruling Unity Party is no different from the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) of President Goerge Manneh Weah.

GYM alleged that UP and CDC are all groups of corrupt and desperate state looters.

It noted that for so long, pseudo-patriots and opportunists who have no history of openly speaking against societal ills have used political rhetoric to ascend to state power and then revert to the old order of corruption and other vices that have undermined Liberiaā€™s growth and development.

“On this note, the attention of the Gongloe Youth Movement is drawn to the continued demonstration of deception and lies by Mr. Joseph Nyumah Boakai, particularly his so-called Anti-corruption message,” said Mohammed Deygo, GYMā€™s Vice Chair for Political Education.

According to him, the UP-standard bearer in a statement allegedly struggled to explain his plan to fight corruption but selectively named which specific past government to prosecute if elected as president of Liberia.

He explained that Mr. Boakai promised to recover stolen funds and ill-gotten properties from officials of the Weah-led government and to ensure a thorough examination of the Republic of Liberia’s contracts.

“We from the camp of Cllr. Tiawan Gongloe see the statement made by the former Vice President as a pure deception, falsehood, and desperate political manoeuvring intended to whitewash the already exposed leadership deficit of Mr. Boakai and the Unity Party,” Mr. Deygo noted.

Moreover, Mr. Deygo described Amb. Boakai as a man who defied the US Government’s warning for non-interaction with corrupt, sanctioned government officials. He believes that Amb. Boakai lacks total courage and the determining will to fight corruption if elected as president of Liberia.

He noted that Amb. Boakai wordlessly served as Vice President for 12 years in a government where corruption became a friendly vampire.
