House reviews Legislation for Liberia’s Barbering and Cosmetology Industry

In a move to professionalize and regulate Liberia’s barbering and cosmetology sector, Rep. P. Mike Jurry of Harper District #1, Maryland County, and others have presented the “Liberia Barbering and Cosmetology Board Act” to the plenary for enactment.

Key Provisions of the Act:

Establishment of LIBCB: This proposal creates the Liberia Barbering and Cosmetology Board (LIBCB) as an autonomous regulatory authority responsible for overseeing industry standards, licensing, and promotion.

Defining Scope: Clearly outlines the services falling under barbering and cosmetology to ensure precise regulation and practice.

Objectives and Functions: Aims to safeguard public health and consumer interests through inspections, ongoing education, and training for industry practitioners.

Board Composition: The proposal calls for a diverse board structure with experts from relevant fields to ensure comprehensive oversight and effective governance.

Financial Arrangements: Ensures the Board’s financial sustainability through licensing fees, fines, and budget appropriations.

Enforcement and Penalties: Empowers the Board to enforce compliance and impose penalties for violations to uphold industry standards.

Regulatory Framework: Grants the Board authority to issue necessary regulations for the Act’s effective implementation.

“By instituting strict licensing requirements, setting industry standards, and emphasizing consumer protection, the Act aims to foster professionalism, ensure service quality, and stimulate economic growth. Hon. Jurry urges the plenary to pass the Barbering and Cosmetology Board Act, emphasizing its potential to create a regulated, safe, and thriving sector in Liberia, leading to job creation and increased revenue,” Rep.Jurry’s Plea told the Plenary.

The plenary has referred the bill to the Health and Judiciary committees for review, with a report expected within two weeks.-Press release
