MDR recommends expulsion of Bangura, others

The National Executive Committee of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) has recommended the expulsion of three senior partisans, inclusive of Mr. Wilfred Bangural, II.

The recommendation to expel Mr. Bangura, Melvin L. Yealu, and Gunpue L. Kargon, is in response to allegations of constitutional violations by three senior party members.

The party said the decision follows a thorough investigation against Mr. Bangura, MDR National Vice Chairman for Presidential Affairs; Mr. Yealu, Secretary General; and Mr. Gunpue L. Kargon, Representative of District #4, Nimba.

The party officials were accused of allegedly violating Article 14(a) of the MDR constitution, which states that no registered member of the party should owe loyalty to any other party or cause any member to pledge allegiance to another party.

The investigation concluded that all three senior partisans had indeed violated this provision.

The findings revealed that Bangura, during his press conference on January 23, publicly declared his unwavering support for President George Manneh Weah’s reelection bid.

The party accused Bangura of allegedly vowing to utilize all available legal, moral, and political means to ensure President Weah’s victory with a decisive mandate.

“Such a statement directly contradicted the MDR’s constitution, which strictly prohibits its members from supporting any other party,” an MDR press release said.

The release alleged further that evidence was gathered against Melvin L. Yealu, who was allegedly found to be actively involved in the Nimba for Weah Movement as its Secretary General.

It noted that this engagement was deemed to be against the best interests of the MDR in the upcoming elections.

Additionally, it said both Bangura and Yealu were observed wearing apparel affiliated with the ruling party, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), during a gathering on February 4, 2023.

They allegedly expressed their support openly for President Weah’s candidacy.

MDR noted that such actions according to the inquiry committee set up to investigate the allegations considered a violation of Articles 12 (a) and 12 (b) of the constitution, which prohibit misrepresentation of the party’s image.

According to the release, Mr. Gunpue L. Kargon, the Representative for District #4, Nimba County, was implicated in canvassing support for the CDC presidential hopeful, contradicting the MDR’s stance in the election.

It further said his remarks during a meeting on May 13, 2023, in Ghanta City confirmed his endorsement of the CDC presidential bid, causing a breach of party loyalty.

The release claimed that the National Elections Committee’s board of inquiry conducted a fair and thorough investigation.

It said it granted due process to each partisan involved, as mandated by the MDR constitution.

Based on the committee’s findings, it said it unanimously recommended the expulsion or impeachment of Mr. Bangura, Mr. Yealu, and Mr. Kargon for the alleged violations.

Consequently, the release said, the National Executive Committee of the MDR voted unanimously to expel the accused officials.

“The decision emphasizes that anyone engaging in business with these expelled members in the name of the MDR would do so at their own risk and without the support of the party,” the release said.

Meanwhile, the release further stated that the MDR remains committed to upholding the principles and integrity of its constitution as it prepares for the upcoming elections.

The party reaffirms its dedication to promoting democracy and reconciliation in Liberia, to build a prosperous and united nation.
