Opposition supporters switch loyalty to Rep. Gray

By Bridgett Milton

Some residents of Montserrado County Electoral District #8 who allegedly supported the Coalition of Liberia Progress (CLP) 2017 representative candidate George Abu Miller, have now switched loyalty to incumbent Representative Moses Acarous Gray.

The group that once called itself the ‘George Abu Miller Political Actions Committee’ (GAMPAC), says it now supports the re-election bid of Mr. Gray, the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) District #8 Representative.

The group’s political decision to align with the CDC lawmaker comes as the 2023 presidential and legislative elections draw closer.

In pledging their support to Rep. Gray, the group said its former legislative candidate Mr. Miller did not appreciate those who voted for him in 2017, and he returned to the United States without paying pool watchers.

The leadership of GAMPAC signed a petition statement that detailed their reasons for supporting Mr. Gray’s re-election bid.

The group’s leaders explained that in the 2017 elections, they crafted ideas, developed political road maps, and set the indispensable political manifesto for a political neophyte who was just a businessman living in megalomania.

“Throughout, the George Abu Miller Political Actions Committee (GAMPAC) and community structures were able to add political value to the Coalition of Liberia Progress (CLP) Candidate in Person of Hon. George Abu Miller,” the group said.

It added that its former candidate secured 3,113 (11.43%) votes, placing him in third place in 2017. But it alleged that he did not appreciate them.

Reading the petition statement, GAMPAC Secretary General Musa Malcolm Sheriff told reporters that after the 2017 elections, Mr. Miller immediately flew to the United States.

He claimed that Miller left without compensating pool watchers. According to Sheriff, during a quagmire on the street, Miller allegedly informed GAMPAC leadership that his wife asked him to forget about politics.

He alleged that Miller indicated that he had no interest in becoming a representative anymore in Liberia.

“Surprisingly in March 2023, we began seeing handbills with his picture at strategic entry points of the district, instructing our people to register to vote,” said Sheriff.

Sheriff praised Rep. Gray for submitting and sponsoring many bills and being accessible and punctual in discharging his functions.
