Traditional Midwives Told To Exercise Diligence

The County Health Officer of Margibi, Doctor Hawa Kromah, has underscored the need for traditional midwives in the health sector to handle maternal cases with serious care in saving lives.

Doctor Kromah emphasized that the health profession is a very sensitive discipline that involves human lives therefore; practitioners should execute their respective duties with high degree of professionalism.

According to the Liberia News Agency, the County Health Officer spoke at the Kakata City Hall during a one-day Maternal Health Conference recently for trained traditional midwives. She said maternal healthcare is a very delicate task because when a woman gives birth, that child should be taken care of properly.

Doctor Kromah said the one-day maternal health conference was intended to review standard of work by traditional midwives in the wake of increase of maternal death in Margibi County.

In remarks, Margibi County Superintendent John Buway called on the participants to take the issue of maternal healthcare with seriousness, adding midwives serve as a bridge between a mother and her forthcoming child.

Superintendent Buway said it was quite discouraging to learn that maternal mortality rate in the county is on the increase when government is exerting every effort to reduce maternal mortality in the country.

The one-day maternal health conference brought together over 30 trained traditional midwives, district and township commissioners and as well as paramount, clan and town chiefs in Margibi County.
