UP partisans in Nimba cry foul

Supporters of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s ruling Unity Party in Nimba are threatening to stage a sustained protest in the county over government employment.

By Thomas Domah, Nimba County

Nimba County, Thursday, March 21, 2024-Over ten thousand Nimbaians who voted for President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the Unity Party in Nimba County are threatening to bring the party to public disrepute through repeated protests in demand for job opportunities.

The aggrieved supporters told reporters that they had waited too long without a response from the government they helped bring to power.

According to them, the UP leadership and executives don’t have time for them. Still, they are being asked to contact the leadership of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) of the self-proclaimed godfather of Nimba, Senator Prince Johnson, and Vice President Jeremiah Koung for an appointment.

However, the aggrieved Boakai supporters say they have made all efforts to have their demand addressed, but to no avail.

The head of the district coordinators of all nine electoral districts in the county and spokesperson for the group, Moses Ghicarn, speaking in disappointment and frustration, disclosed that the pending protest will be a non-stop exercise in the county until they can get redress from the government.

He says they will not allow any appointment in the county until something is done about their situation, further vowing that they will not work with any of those local government officials that President Joseph Boakai will appoint.

Mr. Ghicarn explains that President Boakai is making appointments in the county from the MDR of Senator Johnson and VP Jeremiah Koung while excluding those from the Unity Party.

“Our own party doesn’t have time and respect for us, but rather the MDR party of Senator Prince Johnson and friends of Jeremiah Koung, who is now the Vice President. They want us to bring them to public disrepute”, he notes.

According to him, only MDR leadership is benefiting in terms of job opportunities.

“In so doing, we will demand respect from the national leadership of the ruling Unity Party.”

This is the second time in less than two months that partisans of the ruling UP in votes-rich Nimba are coming public to engage their own government about jobs, accusing the MDR of benefiting instead.
