40 ft. container seized with smuggled goods

The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) has confiscated a 40- foot container marked MRKU-565484-1, smuggled into thecountry from China.

According to the LRA, the container, which has assorted electronic items, ceramic tiles, bath room fixtures, used clothes and bags, was declared as slippers. But following investigation, it was established that only one foot of slippers was in the 40 foot container.

The container had a Clean Report of Findings (CRF), but without a BIVAC Seal. The LRA says the entire contents of the 40-foot container were undeclared in violation of Section 1608 of the Liberia Revenue Code. LRA Senior Security /Investigation Consultant, Sam Gaye, said investigation has identified one Massa Dukuly of Waterside, Monrovia, as the importer, who allegedly conspired with multiple importers and organized the elaborate smuggling ring.

Meanwhile, the LRA is currently assessing the smuggled goods to determine the  value, taxes and penalties to be imposed against the alleged smugglers, vowing to pursue enforcement actions in accordance with the law. –Press Release
