Bassa High School goalie found dead

Family members, students, friends and ordinary residents of Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County are grieving the death of Henry Garjay, alias Ter Stegen, whose lifeless body was discovered on Monday, 26 December near the Atlantic Ocean in Baconie community outside Buchanan after several hours of search.

The sad incident reportedly occurred Monday afternoon at Sunset Beach, where he had gone to celebrate Christmas when he allegedly drowned.

The late Ter Stegen was an 11th grader of at Bassa High School in Buchanan and served on the school’s football team as a goalkeeper for the past two years.

He was also goalkeeper for a grassroots football club in Buchanan known as Boss Man FC.

Abraham Kolliea, a close friend of the deceased, narrated that they had planned to go on the beach when he received information that one of his uncles, who owns a car, was headed for the county.

Abraham continues that upon hearing the information, he told the late Garjay and they collected hundred Liberian dollars each to give to the uncle to drive them to the beach.

According to him, when they arrived at the beach, the late Garjay had a cup of alcoholic beverage, apparently intoxicated and they took off their clothes and got in the water to bathe.

“When the first person was leaving[drowning] in the water, we went and brought him up on the shore”, he adds.

He says subsequently that evening, they couldn’t see Stegen. “So, we went to the DJ and that’s how the whole beach joined us yesterday [Tuesday] to look for him but we couldn’t find him.”

He continues that they called back home and inquired whether Garjay was there, but the family said no.

Meanwhile, Garjay’s lifeless remains were discovered Tuesday, December 27, 2022, near the Atlantic Ocean in Baconie Community, outside Buchanan.

Family members are awaiting ongoing investigation by the Crime Services Division of the Liberia National Police in Buchanan to establish the cause of death. Editing by Jonathan Browne
