EU dismisses election rumor

The Head of the European Union Delegation to Liberia has distanced itself from quotes circulating on social media that it knows who should be the next President of Liberia.

In a brief statement issued Monday, October 30, the Head of EU Delegation to Liberia said the people of Liberia have shown their strong commitment to democracy in the peaceful general elections held on 10 October where they turned up in very high numbers. With their votes, the people of Liberia have decided that the presidential elections will be decided in a run-off on 14 November.

“The quotes that are circulating in the press and social media referring to alleged comments by EU and Member State diplomats about who should be the next President are without foundation,” the statement said, adding “All parties and citizens have a responsibility for the peaceful conduct of the upcoming elections. The media has a responsibility to act with integrity and professionalism by fact-checking its stories.”
