-To contest for senate

The National Elections Commission (NEC) finally accepts the nomination of designated former State Minister Nathaniel Falo McGill to contest for the senate in Margibi County in the October 10th Presidential and Legislative elections.

The NEC Tuesday, August 2, 2023, certificated Mr. McGill thus, qualifying him to contest in the coming elections.

The NEC also met with Presidential Candidates at the Commission headquarters in Sinkor, Monrovia and disclosed that full list of eligible candidates for October’s polls will be published on August 5, 2023, to coincide with official start of campaign for the elections.

NEC Chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah assures free, fair, credible and transparent elections, adding that the NEC has thereby begun certificating eligible candidates ahead of publication of lists for candidates vying for the Presidency, Senate and House of Representatives.

The former Chief of Staff of the President along with former Solicitor-General Cllr. Sayma Syrenius Cephus and former Managing Director of the National Port Authority (NPA) Bill Twehway were sanctioned in August 2022, by the United States Treasury Department for their involvement in public corruption.

Mr. McGill in July 2023 won the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) primary in Margibi on white ballot, having earlier submitted his Candidate Nomination papers to the Elections Commission.

Public skepticism has emerged whether the Commission would have qualified him in the face of warning by the Government of the United States that it would not do business with sanctioned individuals and, noting that anyone doing business with them could face the wrath of the U.S. government.

Also on the U.S. sanction list are Senators Varney G. Sherman of Grand Cape County and Prince Yormie Johnson of Nimba County for bribery and vote-buying or ‘pay for play’ respectively.

However, these individuals are yet to have an opportunity in court to challenge allegations made against them

McGill, faces stiff competition in the county from others, including former Senator Claries Alpha Jah, who is making a comeback, Emmanuel Giddings, and incumbent Senator James Tondola, among others. Editing by Jonathan Browne
