Public school abandoned in Gbarpolu

A primary public school in Gbarpolu County has been reportedly abandoned due to alleged dispute over the land on which it is constructed. The doors of the Robert Town Public School in Kokpayea Chiefdom, district#1 are reportedly shut and grass has taken over the campus.

According to the state-owned Liberia Broadcasting System or LBS, the school was constructed by the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment, LACE, but the facility is being occupied by bats and rodents.

Report says besides the land dispute, the school also lacks teachers. it is said to have had an enrolment of more than 100 pupils during the 2015/2016 academic year. Residents of the community reportedly met to discuss how to have the school re-opened in order for their kids to return to regular classes.

The LBS correspondent in the county said when the County Educational Officer (CEO) of Gbarpolu was contacted via mobile, he promised to comment at a later time. However, the correspondent said when he visited the campus recently, he saw about 27 pupils in class with two instructional staffs.
