Battle for endorsement intensifies

-as CDC, UP engage electorates

By Kruah Thompson

In a bid to secure a stronger foothold in the upcoming presidential runoff election, the ruling Congress of Democratic Change (CDC) and the main opposition Unity Party (UP) announce a series of high-profile endorsements expected to inject new energy into their campaigns.

As the race intensifies, the CDC, led by incumbent President George Weah, is set to face off against its main rival, the UP, led by former Vice President Joseph Boakai in the upcoming runoff.

The two parties have been negotiating endorsement deals behind closed doors with other opposition candidates, civil society, and religious groups.

Among the notable endorsements received by the Unity Party is the support of several influential political figures and community leaders. This includes the backing of the opposition Grassroots Development Movement of defeated presidential candidate Edward Appleton, Jr., and Amara Konneh, a well-respected former Finance Minister who has thrown his weight behind the Unity Party.

In a press conference held at the Resource Center in Monrovia recently, Amara Konneh and those who have endorsed former VP Boakai expressed confidence in the UP leader’s ability to address Liberia’s most pressing issues and bring about positive change.

On the other hand, the CDC has also garnered support of political parties and prominent individuals in the country.

The Coalition endorsement is expected to resonate with a significant segment of the electorate that shares its ideologies.

These endorsements come at a crucial juncture in the campaign, with the ruling CDC and the UP locked in a fierce battle for the hearts and minds of voters.

Since the pronouncement of the runoff poll by the National Elections Commission, both parties have been actively campaigning on a platform centered around education, healthcare, and road infrastructure, which they believe will address challenges facing the nation.

The Opposition Unity Party, on the other hand, is not backing down and has its own slate of endorsements and campaign promises. This intense competition is setting the stage for a runoff election that could define the future of the nation.

As campaign intensifies, they are ramping up their efforts to reach out to voters across the country. Rallies, town hall meetings, and televised debates are all part of the strategy to engage with the electorate and make their case why they should be entrusted with the nation’s highest office.

On Thursday, President Weah was seen in Montserrado County, conducting door-to-door campaign, engaging voters to support him in the November 14, 2023, runoff.

Similarly, the Unity Party has also been actively involved in a series of rallies and political campaigns.

With the presidential runoff election fast approaching, the spotlight is on the two parties, as they receive endorsements, which could play a pivotal role in the final outcome. Editing by Jonathan Browne
