Fire destroys NEC head-office in Bassa

A strange fire incident which occurred at the Grand Bassa sub-head office of the National Elections Commission or NEC on Sunday afternoon destroyed its offices and a 20ft container containing electoral materials of the commission.

The fire which began at the sub-head office extended to the UNMIL donated container containing the electoral materials, destroying its contents in the process. It took the efforts of the National Port Authority or NPA fire service in the county to bring the situation under control.

NEC Comunications Director Joey Kennedy in a mobile interview with this paper said materials destroyed includes NEC records over the years particularly as it relates to Grand Bassa elections.

“We have written the Liberian National Police and the County’s officials concerning the fire incident this afternoon,” Mr. Kennedy said as he struggles to collect his breath.

NEC is yet to announced the cost of damage done to its sub-head office.

The fire incident comes as the electoral body steps up its preparations for the upcoming 2017 Presidential and Legislative elections. It also comes ahead of a much anticipated referendum in which Liberian are expected to vote on ten key prepositions amongst them the dual citizenship.

Liberian is arguably the only country in the world which do not allow none-negro to be citizen and also it does allow dual citizenship.. President Ellen Johnson -Sirleaf is among several well meaning Liberians who are advocating for a dual citizenship.
