Pres. Sirleaf Commends Council of Churches

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has commended the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) for lending their support to the Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service of Liberia’s 170th Independence Anniversary and urged all Liberians to reflect as a nation on the content of the inspirational preaching at this year’s Independence Thanksgiving Service.

She admonished both Christians and Muslims, political leaders, presidential and legislative aspirants to honestly reflect as a nation. “We want to thank the Council of Churches for their support as we celebrate our 170th Independence Day. May the messages from our religious leaders sink deep into our hearts; May it lead us to a process of self-reflection; reflection as a nation; reflection as leaders; reflection as individuals; May we go away with the assurance that God is with us; With the assurance that when we do what is right; this nation will be blessed,” she said passionately.

An Executive Mansion release says, President Sirleaf made the statement on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the edifice of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Church on Broad Street in Monrovia during a Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service in observance of Liberia’s 170th Independence Anniversary.

Earlier, the Presiding Bishop of the 15th Episcopal District of the African Methodist Church in Liberia, Bishop David N. Daniels, who spoke on the Theme: “Reasons For Thanksgiving,” (Psalm 142:1-4), said Liberians remain grateful to Jehovah God, The Almighty for giving us this wonderful invitation to hear this your message.”

Bishop Daniels said when we reflect on the reasons for Thanksgiving and think about where God has brought us from – as a people and a nation, there is every reason to give thanks.” He recalled that in 1979, Liberians allowed the price of rice to overcome them, saying: “We could not wait for democracy and peaceful elections to transition the country from one administration to the other.

“Together, we can make it,” Bishop Daniels told the congregation. He said – united we will stand as a nation but divided we are bound to fail. He recalled that on December 24th, 1989, the Liberian people made one of the worst mistakes in their lives when they allowed destruction upon themselves.

Bishop Daniels noted that despite that mistake – God’s favor never left the Liberian nation. He said no one knew that in the long run – a ‘woman’, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, as destined by God would become President of this country. He thanked God for making Liberia peaceful during the last 11years.

He urged the legislature, executive, judiciary as well as political parties, their leaders and ordinary Liberians who will be participating in the October elections – that when we work together, stand together, pray together and move together; we will overcome every obstacle before us, as people.

Bishop Daniels challenged Liberians to get out of the attitude of ingratitude – because no one owes you anything. He used the occasion to commend President Sirleaf for the level of press freedom over the years. He said only.

Prayers were offered for peaceful elections, as well as national peace and reconciliation. The Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service was attended by senior government officials including the Chief Justice and Members of the Supreme Court Bench, the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives, the President Pro-Tempore and members of the Liberian Senate, religious leaders, ordinary Liberians and foreign residents alike.-Press release
