Weah launches scholarship drive

Montserrado County Senator George Weah is encouraging young people in the country to use their knowledge to create opportunities that will benefit their lives and those of other young people. 

According to Senator Weah, the idea of young people using their knowledge to create opportunities would pave the way for the future generation to have better learning environment.

He described education as an opportunity to make wisdom, because it is the most powerful weapon that can change the world and human lives.

The Montserrado County Senator made the remarks during the launch of the Montserrado County scholarship and fund-raising program on Friday, May 1, 2015 at the Monrovia city hall.

He also urged some of his colleagues to focus on giving young people scholarships in every part of the country, emphasizing that the issue of giving out scholarships to young people in the country is to release the academic burden from the heads of parents or guardians, saying, “the scholarships we give to young people are what help them to become somebody for the future.” 

Weah noted that as lawmakers representing the people, it was their cooperate and social responsibility to reach out to their various constituents to offer them scholarships to transform their lives through academic and other activities.

Senator Weah awarded scholarships to the fifteen lawmakers representing the 17 districts of Montserrado County, another 15 scholarships to 15 senators to empower students within their districts and counties, respectively.

Institutions also benefiting from the Montserrado County scholarship program include the University of Liberia (20), Cuttington University (20) Starz College of Technology (10), Gibraltar Community (50), AMEU (7), Thumps up Community in Caldwell (10), and the Turkish Light International School (3).

The United Methodist University also received 3 scholarships, among others. 

Meanwhile, the President of the Bong Technical College in Bong County, Dr. John S. Flomo, who served as Guest Speaker during the launch, described education as the way of developing the mind of a child. Dr. Flomo said it was essential because it is one factor that contributes to developing a person, who wants to be responsible in life.

He added that many people forget about the future of their children by downplaying their children’s education, noting that education helps to make a child a better citizen of a country.  He said officials of government must learn how to extend their hands by giving out scholarships, because they help to buttress government’s efforts in supporting less fortunate children in the country.
