Drugs shortage hits major clinics in Bong

Serious drugs shortage has hit several clinics in Zota and Panta districts, Bong County with nurses at public clinics resorting to giving prescriptions to patients in the districts to purchase drugs at private drugstores.

Clinics affected include Belefinai and Shankpallai clinics in Zota District and Jorwah clinic in Panta District, among others. Some residents of the two districts have reportedly resorted to taking in herbs for curative purposes due to the situation.

Residents are calling for government’s quick intervention through the Bong County Health Team. The situation is so bad that it is even difficult to see ordinary drugs like Paracetamol and Oral Rehydration Salt or ORS.

Sources claim the shortage is sometimes caused by huge influx of Guinean Nationals, who usually come to Liberia especially, from bordering towns to seek medication.
They disclosed that 50 percent of patients who visit clinics in the district for medication are Guineans.Residents who do not have money to seek medication at private facilities risk dying of malaria and other sicknesses which have widely spread in the region.

When contacted by this paper, the Head of the Communities Heath Department at the Bong County Health Team Jefferson Koffah, says the situation has been brought to the attention of the Health Team, adding that they are currently contemplating on sending drugs to the two districts.

He said as soon as they receive drugs from headquarters, Zota and Panta districts would be the first to receive supply. He expresses regret over the situation and promises government’s quick intervention.
