Will CDC support Amb. Sulunteh?

It remains to be seen if the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) of President – elect George Manneh Weah would support former Liberian Ambassador to the US, Mexico and Canada Jeremiah C. Sulunteh for a senatorial by-election in Bong County to occupy an office left vacant on the election of Sen. Jewel Howard Taylor as Mr. Weah’s Vice President.

Amb. Sulunteh resigned as Liberia’s Ambassador to follow his political quest back home, joining businessman Alexandra B. Cummings as vice Standard Bearer on the Alternative National Congress (ANC) ticket in the 10 October presidential and representatives elections.

After the 10 October elections which his party lost, there was expectation in Bong County that the former Ambassador would have supported Unity Party’s Joseph Nyumah Boakai, given Sulunteh’s extensive standing in the party’s government.

But Sulunteh endorsed Mr. George Weah and his CDC due to what he called Bong “County agenda” which is yet to be explained to locals. After he pledged his support to the CDC, Mr. Sulunteh was seen in almost every corner with the CDC Vice Standard Bearer Jewel Howard Taylor campaigning for victory.

When Ambassador George Weah and Madam Jewel Howard Taylor were announced winners of the December 26 runoff election, the relationship between Madam Taylor and Mr. Sulunteh improved again. Ambassador Sulunteh was again seen with the Liberia Vice President – elect at about 7:30 PM during her special visit to Bong County and also took tour with her the next day.

There have been speculation that the CDC through its Vice Standard Bearer will support Amb. Sulunteh in the expected by-election in Bong County.
