Senator Chea wants food security

Sinoe County Senator Cllr. Augustine Chea writes plenary of the Liberian Senate, asking for the establishment of a “Food Security and Poverty Alleviation Commission”.

In his communication read in session Wednesday, June 10, he reminds his colleagues that as Legislators, they possess the power to change the lives of their people and by establishing such commission would help in achieving this.

Sen. Chea notes that countries that invest in Agriculture and produce more food have low poverty rate. Therefore, he calls on the senate to build a strong, vibrant and sustainable Agriculture sector for the people.

He says current unemployment rate in the country is high, but there are lot of employment opportunities in the private sector that the youth could take advantage of, adding the youth are looking up to government for employment and everything else and if their expectations are not met, it becomes the people against the government.

According to him, the people would care less about government if they can afford on their own, stressing that government should make Agriculture a national priority to create jobs that would produce more food for the country.

“The Country has fertile soil [and] abundant water for a productive Agriculture sector; we must invest in Agricultural commodities to modernize our country by increasing food and making farm work attractive for the people.” After reading of the communication by the Secretary of the Senate, the document was forwarded to the senate committee on Agriculture and Autonomous Agency for scrutiny and advice.
